Couples will love this romantic chill-out getaway beach property, not far from the nightlife in Lamai, which offers spotless and well-appointed villas and rooms with a soft northern Thai touch around two pools. The highlight is The Dining Room which serves outstanding Mediterranean cuisine.
Rocky’s Resort is located in the far south of Lamai, far enough from the crowds to offer a sense of serenity but close enough to walk right into Samui’s after dark madness. The resort’s complimentary minivan takes five minutes to the main nightlife strip, 25 minutes to Chaweng and about 30 minutes to the airport.
Rocky’s has its own small private beach. The water is a little shallow and guests might have to wade about 50 metres before they can swim. A coral reef a hundred metres offshore is home to sea horses and turtles.
Address: 438/1 Moo 1, T. Maret, Amphur Koh Samui, Suratthani 84310, Thailand.
Style & character
Rocky Resort is a simple, very pleasant boutique resort. Spacious bungalows and villas tumble down a lush tropical garden to the beach. It’s definitely for couples, though families are welcome. Peace and harmony prevail around the pools, the music is subdued and the concept is simple: relax, relax, relax.
Service & facilities
Service is prompt, friendly and pretty informal.
Facilities are simple but absolutely sufficient for a great lazy holiday. The upper free-form pool is split in two parts and fine for a swim. The lower pool is smaller and more suitable for enjoying a cocktail. Guests may avail themselves to a complimentary kayak.
Massages and cooking classes are available on request and the resort organises interesting all-day island tours on its own boat that includes snorkelling, fishing and lunch.
Guests who’d like to play a round of golf may do so with the gregarious British general manager at the island’s best course where they will receive a discount.
Rooms are compact, spotless and bright, all kept in soft red tones and northern Thai Lanna furnishings along with dark woods, plenty of mirrors and sumptuous cast iron hanging lamps. All rooms feature comfortable balconies with pool or garden views or large patios.
Rooms come with air-conditioning, TV and DVD player, ceiling fans, a safe, fresh fruit, tea and coffee-making facilities, incense, and a minibar. The beds are super comfortable and a broad Thai style low sofa with a thick mattress makes an afternoon snooze tempting.
Food & drink
Right by the upper pool, the Bistro serves Western comfort food – pasta, burgers, pizzas, steaks and sandwiches, as well as a decent selection of Thai dishes.
The Rocky Resort is well known for its fine dining institution, The Dining Room, which serves truly excellent French Mediterranean cuisine on a series of rocks above the beach, and is popular with both tourists and expats. Everything from the Beef Rossini to the snow fish is very well done, service is outstanding and the beachside ambience is great.
Rocky’s organises themed food nights such as a beach barbecue with fire dancers.
Breakfast is part buffet, part à la carte, breads and pastries are excellent and the variety of egg-based dishes is exhaustive.
Access for guests with disabilities?
The kids’ club is excellent, always supervised and well-equipped with games for children of all ages. A babysitter can be arranged and during high season, special kids’ activities are organised. The restaurants have kids’ menus and the general manager occasionally dresses as a clown to entertain younger guests.
